The Compact Florescent Lamp (CFL)
The CFL is a flourescent bulb that fits into a standard light bulb socket. The advantage of the bulb is that it can save over $30 in electricity costs over the lamp’s lifetime compared to an incandescent lamp. The initial purchase price of a CFL is often significantly higher than a standard incandescent lamp of the same output. This cost is usually recouped by the energy savings based on normal bulb usage. The use of this bulb has a significant impact on our planet due to less energy being used and less carbon being generated to produce the same amount of light.
The CFL now comes in many different bulb sizes (standard, candellabra, spot lights, etc.) as well as many select spectrums of light that allow for options beyond the original flouresent yellowish light.
The importance of recycling and where to find recycling options:
CFL and incandescent bulbs contain mercury and therefore need to be handled carefully. If broken you should follow certain guidlines to prevent contact with the mercury. Recycling is extremely important.
